After the year we had in 2020, you might think that gas masks and fall-out shelters would be a growing trend in home design, but fortunately, not for most of us. 2020 was a transformative year. Because of the viral pandemic, we spent more time than ever in our homes. Locked down and confined to our “space,” we entertained ourselves with streaming videos and virtual Zoom meetings. We found places to work and study, and developed ways to cope with our nearest and dearest without killing them. As a result, the rooms and spaces in our homes became multifunctional areas that we used for work, school, solace and entertainment.
With 2020 now firmly behind us, what will be some of the trends for home interiors in 2021? Elle Decor’s zine recently pulled together predictions from some of their best designers and industry professionals to forecast what trending this year.
Not surprisingly, soothing neutral colors are on the palettes of many designers, offset by splashes of stronger accents. Relaxed and cozy looks will be stuffed with more comfy chairs and one-of-a-kind pieces instead of rooms full of mid-century furniture. With more seats come more seating areas that are also usable and functional, like a game or library table, or seating for reading.
Because many of us are working and learning from home, bringing in natural materials like marble, wood, and caning can create a sense of calmness in our personal spaces. But as we schedule more Zoom meetings, accessories on the bookshelves behind us become more important. Keep your accessories stylish and to a minimum.
If anything came out of our nine-months-and-counting lock-down at home it was home entertainment. Staying in is the new going out, so entertainment spaces and bigger, better TVs and sound systems have become a priority. Dining too has taken on more importance, reflected in trends toward stylishly designed kitchens and furnishings.
